Travel U.S. Route 11, which generally follows the path of the old Valley Pike. This will take you up the Valley - north to south. You may want to explore Rt.11 and enjoy a road full of scenic beauty as well as interpreted Civil War sites . Shenandoah County Tourism I-81 Exits 298 to 264. Take a side trip down the old Valley Pike (US 11). There isn't really a way "around" DC unless you went down 81 to 64 East. I suspect that route adds about 30-45 minutes if there isn't traffic around Baltimore or DC. Otherwise, the best route varies based on current traffic conditions and I would honestly say to check Gmaps from a phone or computer just prior to leaving.
